Villeneuve-les-Avignon & Avignon, City of the Popes

Departure for Villeneuve-les-Avignon, a charming town on the right bank of the Rhone. A visit to the Chartreuse du Val de Benediction, founded in the 14th century by Pope Innocent VI — one of the largest monastic complexes in France, with its cloisters, gardens and monks' cells, a true haven of peace steeped in history.

Lunch nearby

After lunch, Avignon, the former papal city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the ramparts, the cathedral and the famous Saint-Benezet Bridge — the Pont d'Avignon. View of the Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic palace in Europe (guided visit available at supplement). Free time to soak up the atmosphere of the historic centre and its lively squares.

Day 3

A Lavender Distillery, Beaucaire, Tarascon & Provencal Fabrics

Discover the cultivation of lavender, immortelle and aromatic plants at a distillery introducing the art of extracting high-quality organic essential oils. Make your own lavender sachet — and from mid-June to mid-August, an optional picking and distillation workshop is available (supplement).

After lunch at the hotel, a stroll through Beaucaire, situated on the Via Domitia — the oldest Roman road in Gaul: pedestrianised centre, narrow streets, the collegiate church and elegant mansions.
