Day 2

Cambo-les-Bains, a stylish oasis owed to Edmond Rostand – Biarritz

Cambo-les-Bains: a visit to Arnaga, the house-museum dedicated to Edmond Rostand, the celebrated author of Cyrano de Bergerac. The villa itself is a gem of Basque architecture, and the magnificent French formal gardens invite a leisurely stroll.

Lunch at the hotel

After lunch at the hotel, on to Biarritz — a small Basque fishing port transformed into an imperial resort under Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie, now as famous for surfing as for its Belle Epoque grandeur. Free time to explore the seafront and the Rocher de la Vierge.

Bayonne & Ibardin

Bayonne, City of Art and History: the soaring Gothic cathedral and its 14th-century cloister, the picturesque streets with their medieval arcades, the ramparts designed by Vauban, and the legendary chocolate shops that made Bayonne the chocolate capital of France. At the Ibai Alde cannery, a tasting of Basque regional specialities.

Lunch

On to Ibardin — the former smugglers' huts on the Franco-Spanish border have become a celebrated stopping point, with a viewpoint overlooking a remarkable landscape all the way to the ocean.
