Day 2

Saint-Gilles Abbey, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer & Pont de Gau Bird Park

Departure for the Abbey Church of Saint-Gilles — a jewel of Romanesque sculpture and a major stop on the Way of St James, celebrated for its intricately carved west facade. Then into the Camargue, heading for Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the iconic village nestled between sea and lagoon, with its formidable fortified church whose crypt houses the statue of Saint Sara, a figure of deep significance in local Romani culture.

Free time to stroll the narrow streets or walk by the sea.

Pétanque competition

The afternoon brings the Pont de Gau Bird Park — 60 hectares of marshland nature reserve offering an outstanding opportunity to observe the flamingos that roam freely through this Camargue landscape. The day ends with a petanque competition.

Day 3

The Bamboo Garden, Cevennes Steam Train & Anduze

Visit the extraordinary Bamboo Garden of Anduze, created in 1856 — the giant bamboos here are unique in Europe. The Japanese garden, a traditional Laotian village and the Dragon Valley complete a remarkable setting. Then the Cevennes steam train to Saint-Jean-du-Gard through the magnificent Gardon Valley (or by coach)

Lunch

On through Mialet and the Cevennes valleys, steeped in the history of the Huguenots and Camisards. A stop at Mas Soubeyran, a typical Cevennes village and key centre of the Protestant resistance. Return via Anduze for free time and shopping.
